Biological Fouling
Potassium permanganate effectively treats biological fouling — algae, biofilm, and protozoan growth — in irrigation lines and pipe systems.
About Biological Fouling
Biological fouling occurs when algae, biofilm, and protozoan organisms colonize irrigation lines, pipe systems, filters, and sprinkler heads. Left untreated, fouling reduces water flow, clogs filters, and can damage irrigation infrastructure. Potassium permanganate is an effective oxidizing agent for treating biological fouling because it destroys organic material through oxidation while breaking down to harmless byproducts (potassium and manganese, which are typical plant nutrients).
Treatment Protocol
Apply potassium permanganate to the wet well at approximately 500 ppm (about 4 pounds per 1,000 gallons). Allow the solution to fill all mainlines and laterals, then shut off pumps to allow overnight contact time. Flush the system thoroughly after treatment and inspect all filters and sprinkler heads. Retreatment in 2 weeks is recommended, with monthly maintenance during warm months.
