Carbon Solutions

Use colloidal, powdered, and granular activated carbon technologies for plume stabilization, adsorption-based treatment, and integrated groundwater remediation strategies.

Carbon Solutions

Carbon-based treatment strategies for plume stabilization and contaminant control

Carbon solutions are used across many remediation projects to adsorb contaminants, reduce dissolved concentrations, and create long-lived treatment zones in the subsurface. Depending on the site objectives, the most appropriate approach may use injectable colloidal activated carbon, powdered activated carbon, or granular activated carbon.

Hepure supports consultants and project teams with product selection and design guidance so carbon can be integrated correctly into in situ groundwater programs, barrier applications, and PFAS stabilization strategies.

Key Strength

Strong adsorption and long-lived contaminant control for dissolved-phase plumes.

Typical Uses

PFAS stabilization, plume control, polishing, and risk-reduction-focused remedies.

Carbon Technology Options

Colloidal Activated Carbon (CAC)

CAC is designed for in situ injection so carbon can be distributed through the formation and form an adsorption zone in place.

  • Best for in situ plume stabilization and dissolved-phase risk reduction.
  • Often selected for PFAS, chlorinated solvent residuals, and mixed-organic plumes.
  • Can be combined with biological or chemical treatment trains.

Powdered Activated Carbon (PAC)

Powdered activated carbon can be used where a fine carbon product is needed for specialized remediation or engineered treatment approaches.

  • Useful where surface area and flexible formulation are important.
  • Can support specialized blending or engineered treatment strategies.

Granular Activated Carbon (GAC)

Granular activated carbon is commonly used in ex situ or barrier-style applications where longer contact times and passive treatment are required.

  • Useful for barrier cells and treatment systems.
  • Can complement broader PFAS and groundwater management strategies.

Where Carbon Fits Best

ScenarioPreferred Carbon Approach
In situ PFAS stabilizationColloidal activated carbon
Passive barrier or treatment cellGranular activated carbon
Polishing / plume controlColloidal or granular activated carbon, depending on delivery approach
Integrated treatment trainCarbon paired with chemical or biological treatment

Important distinction: Carbon solutions and PFAS solutions are closely related but not identical. PFAS is a contaminant category, while carbon is a treatment technology that can be applied to PFAS and other dissolved contaminants.
