About Heavy Metals Contamination

Heavy metals including chromium, nickel, lead, uranium, selenium, copper, cobalt, cadmium, and zinc are common contaminants at industrial, mining, and military sites. Unlike organic contaminants, metals cannot be destroyed — they must be immobilized or converted to less mobile and less toxic forms. Hepure’s Remotox calcium polysulfide and Ferox zero valent iron products address metals through chemical reduction and stabilization.

Calcium Polysulfide (Remotox CaSx)

Hepure’s Remotox is used worldwide for remediation of excavation sites contaminated with heavy metals. Calcium polysulfide chemically reduces hexavalent chromium (Cr⁶⁺) to the less toxic and less mobile trivalent form (Cr³⁺). It is applied via injection or soil mixing to stabilize metals in place.

Zero Valent Iron

Ferox ZVI products reduce and immobilize a wide range of heavy metals through electron transfer at the iron surface. ZVI is particularly effective in permeable reactive barriers (PRBs) where contaminated groundwater flows through the reactive media, with metals being reduced and precipitated onto the iron surfaces.

Ferrous Sulfate

Ferrous sulfate (FeSO4) provides a source of ferrous iron (Fe²⁺) for chemical reduction of oxidized metals. It is commonly used for hexavalent chromium treatment and as a catalyst in Fenton’s chemistry applications.
