PAH Remediation
Hepure provides chemical oxidation products for in situ treatment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in contaminated soil and groundwater.
About PAH Contamination
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a group of organic compounds containing two or more fused aromatic rings. They are commonly found at former manufactured gas plant (MGP) sites, wood treatment facilities, coke production plants, and areas with historical industrial activity. PAHs include compounds such as naphthalene, benzo(a)pyrene, pyrene, and anthracene. Many PAHs are persistent in the environment and are classified as probable or known carcinogens.
ISCO Treatment of PAHs
Potassium permanganate oxidizes PAHs effectively and is one of the most widely used ISCO agents for PAH-contaminated sites. KMnO4’s solid form makes it especially suitable for soil blending at MGP and wood treatment sites where PAH contamination is concentrated in soil. Activated persulfate and Fenton’s chemistry (H2O2 + Fe²⁺) provide alternative oxidation approaches with high oxidation potentials for more recalcitrant PAH compounds.
